Are we a homeless ministry? Are we a house church? Are we a weekly neighborhood block party? Are we a place to drop off the kids?
Yes sort of. We are inspired by Christ and we hunger to be obedient to Him to the best of our ability - regardless of what this looks like to the rest of the world. His words in Matthew 25 resound in our mind: "I was hungry and you gave me something to eat......"
Indeed, He wears distressing disguises.
If we find Him shivering under the bridge in the rain, we had better find a blanket....... If we hear Him crying out for care from His bed at the nursing home, we will do our dead-level best to respond......... If He appears to be lonely and forgotten riding the metro, you bet we are going to try to strike up a conversation.
We know that following Christ leads to crucifixion (Galatians 2:20). His yoke is easy and His burden is light - but we are also told to take up our cross and follow Him. At times, we realize we will collapse under the weight of the cross. At those times we when forget to rely on Him, we rely on each other - and thereby we return and rely on Him moving through our community, His body, the Church.
For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.
But woe to him who is alone when he falls,
For he has no one to help him up.
Ecclesiastes 4:10
We live in community to hold each other accountable, to motivate each other to get up and pray, to encourage one another when our spirits are overwhelmed within us and hope begins to waver, to keep the faith when our minds begin to attack us with doubt.
